[Tweet “There’s a consistent problem that all working women with children face.”]
How to do it all.
Our kids need us consistently throughout the day, often during times that would be considered part of a normal work day. And our work needs to get done. Plus, the household stuff!
As a business owner one of the cool things is that I have flexibility to control my income and my hours.
Recently I had the bright idea to add active streams of income to my bottom line, help out other working moms, and do market research in the area of caregiving and personal assistant work with a future goal of launching another arm of my business called momforhire.com. So I am currently working as a driver two days a week taking a woman’s son to therapy. He is 5 and is high-functioning autistic. She is a professor at The University of Houston. Leaving work every day at 2:30 is a challenge. She found me on Care.com. It is working out well, aside from the fact that on day one my 14 year old need a ride home from tutorials at 3:30 and my 17 year old who normally brings him home scheduled a basketball training session at 3:30. My oldest son works 2:00 – 6:00, and John was out of town. SO here I was, taking someone else’s child to therapy, while Jared, my own son, had to find a ride home. And so is the challenge that we all face.
I was contacted by someone on Care.com to be a virtual personal assistant. This was to be 2 days a week for 4 hours, paying $400 per week. Score! However, the downside is that after we ironed out all of the details the man who wanted to hire me began insisting that I provide him my bank account number. Quickly I realized that it was an identity theft scam. So no job.
What I took away from that experience was this. I can earn over $1600 a month with one or two sales in my business for less time given in exchange. I was undervaluing myself. But the freedom I felt when I thought I had that job was tremendous! So now I am back on track and focused on developing MY business. This whole experience with Care.com is helping me earn a little money, do a little research, help out another mom, and understand MY VALUE. It is more than $25 or $50 an hour. And in order to have the flexibility I desire and be available to my own children now and going forward, the thing I need to be focusing on is creating multiple streams of passive income. SO watch out for my online courses to begin to be released later this year. I’ll be teaching on health, happiness, lifestyle, business, and money. I’d love to hear specific topics you are interested in.
