Got success? As a mom of four I have to get creative about my routines. There are two boys in college, one in high school, and one in elementary school around these parts. So I have to be super sneaky about squeezing in work, and especially focused blocks of time, since I primarily work from home.
I have noticed that having a home office that supports me has helped tremendously. Here are 5 quick and easy ways to transform your space into an abundant haven of work bliss.
1. Clear the damn clutter!
Get intentional about your space.
Here’s a guide for doing so:
If you don’t use it or don’t love it, it has GOT to go.
Now, once the clutter is removed you’re going to want to reorganize the space in a way that is high-functioning and pleasing to you. Add a comfy chair, favorite candle, plant or fresh flowers. Viola! Do not get hung up on this step. If you have heaps of clutter, don’t fret. Just tackle one corner of the room, or even one drawer at a time. Take 15-30 minutes a day for this endeavor. Step by step, day by day, you WILL get it done! And it will be stunning. If it is just too much…I can help.:) Or pop over to Barnes and Noble online and grab the hit book by Marie Kondo, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up – The Japanese Art of De-Cluttering and Organizing. In the least, it will inspire you, and if you don’t find the time to crack it open, it will certainly look pretty on your clutter-free end table.
2. Get the proper equipment.
This is your first level of support!
For an online business here are some of my faves:
* macbook, and the proper software for running your business
* a wireless printer
* a Blue Yeti microphone
* a paper agenda that you LOOOOOOVE
(I recommend trying The Daily Power Journal, of course!)
* multitudes of notebooks, good pens, educational and inspirational books to have on hand for writing days
These items will get you well on your way to having a good foundation for building and maintaining a simple and profitable online business that is not only successful, but feels good.
3. Location, Location, Location!
It matters, y’all.
Make sure your home office is well-located in your home, well laid out, and preferably, choose a room that has a door.
My home office is technically the dining room. SO it is attached to the kitchen. But, there is a door. It is located at the front of our home and has a large window, good desk/computer armoire, a swiveling, adjustable pneumatic desk chair, a super comfy reading chair, a small end table, lamp, and plants. It is simple, comfortable, beautiful, and efficient. My degree and certifications hang on the wall, along with a giclee (a fancy word for canvas wall art) of Venice, and a bulletin board that is covered with things I love, upcoming activities, calendars, and important boy-type information. Aaaand I keep a pillow and blanket on the chair just in case I want to take a nap or meditate, or write somewhere besides the desk.
4. Make it beautiful AF.
Yes. That is what I mean.
If you want a hot pink, velvet desk chair, fluffy pillows, silver walls, and a crystal chandelier, go for it! After all, where else in the house can you get away with having a Queendom? Your office is IT, girlfriend. So, do NOT miss this opportunity. And, as long as you are having all this fun redecorating, make sure it is “on brand” using the colors, style, and feel of your brand. How fun is that?! For some awesome design ideas and inspiration visit Grandin Road, a longtime fave of mine for home and office design! Enter the site at your own risk, though. Just saying.
Last but not least…
5. Simplify the hell out of everything.
Yep. Do that. ASAP
From your routine, to your business plan, to your marketing strategy, support team, and growth plan, you are going to thank yourself later if you Keep It Super Simple! That’s right, KISS!!! Remember, your business is here to support you and to enable you to live your purpose doing work you love in service to others. With ease!
This is going to be a much more enjoyable (and profitable) proposition if you make an ongoing effort to refine your systems, strategies, and business model into the sleekest, most simplified, enjoyable, well-supported, and efficient success machine possible. Work to keep things simple. It will free you to do other things you enjoy like sleep, exercise, eat good food, spend time with family and friends, and travel. Maybe you can even read a novel, see a movie, or prepare a meal at home. Think about it! This is what success is made of. How you spend your days. Not hustling, being short on sleep, incessantly stressed out, rarely seeing your family, and doing work you abhor. I know, I can get a little excited about…the Truth! So be careful what you are building and be intentional about how you are building it. IMHO the more beauty, fun, and pleasure, the better! This is 2017. It is high time to create a new paradigm for success. What could be better than starting with your surroundings?
