We all have something that drives us, something that we are working toward. And sometimes the absence of this thing brings us great distress. As a coach, professionally trained at one the nation’s leading medical schools, Duke Integrative Medicine, I know that there are several things that prevent behavior change. Even when we deeply desire something. I have experienced it in my own life and I have seen it in the lives of my clients. Our brains are wired to protect us and one way they do that is by maintaining the status quo. But sometimes the status quo is not what we desire!
In my consulting practice, clients have been asking for more flexibility, and for a way to work with me (on demand) without a 3-6 month contract. I have resisted this in the past because most people achieve their goals in 3-6 months (or longer if it is something BIG!). But I also know that part of the process of accomplishing something big is breaking it down into smaller chunks. Setting SMART goals. Part of it is addressing and shifting our limiting beliefs. Then, there is the component of accountability. And the critical aspect of…wait for it…taking ACTION! We can do all of the other steps of identifying our why, transforming limiting beliefs and fears, breaking it down, setting smart goals, building in accountability, and finding support, but without action our goals and dreams fall flat and will never be realized. And we can accomplish a GREAT deal in a little as 30 days. It might not bet he end result but it might be tremendous amount of progress where before we were making zero progress. And that is worthwhile! That I can feel good about.
One of the things I have noticed in the coaching industry is that many of the programs our there are overcomplicated, overpriced, and ineffective. I know this from experience because I have utilized some of them. And sometimes we just are not in a position to pay for or make time for the BIG programs.
